Last month, Guri Stark stepped onto a roof in southern Israel. The 70-year-old poet has lived in San Diego for decades, but he’d returned to the country of his birth for a visit. One night, a friend, Livnat Kutz, organized a poetry reading. Around 50 people gathered in Sha'ar HaNegev, a community not far from Gaza. The weather had cooled, and Stark recalled reading a poem in Hebrew called 'Young Mother.
The two bonded over discussions about how to improve life for Arabs and Jews. The last Seidle heard, Silver had been kidnapped. She doesn't know if her friend is alive. 'I fall asleep, I have a nightmare,' Seidle said. 'I wake up and it's like I'm living in a nightmare.' In Scripps Ranch, Rola Abushaban, 50, is thinking about her elderly aunt and uncle in Gaza. Abushaban last spoke to those relatives Tuesday, she said.
