Savinho made his full debut for Manchester City in their Premier League win at Chelsea on the opening day - getting a mixed reception from Pep Guardiola.
Every time Pep Guardiola talks about Savinho, he talks up the Brazilian's ability to play on both wings opposite Jeremy Doku. So we shouldn't have been surprised to see Savinho's full Manchester City debut come on the left with Doku on the right.
Guardiola had been up and down from his seat plenty of times even by the fourth minute, which was when Doku went past Marc Cucurella and crossed a ball over the goal and out of play. The boss simply stood and stared at Doku in disbelief, and he continued to usher instructions to his midfielders about when to get the ball wide. There was a plan but it wasn't quite working.
But Savinho was the one to suffer from the switch. Not only was Guardiola seemingly unmoved by his role in the goal, he was then swapped positions immediately for the benefit of the team. Guardiola suggested post-match that Savinho and Doku initiated the change himself, but added he had been talking to assistant Juanma Lillo about getting the best out of the pair in the opening stages.
After trying to run off the knock, Guardiola called Savinho over just before the half-time whistle, still issuing instructions for the last few seconds. The boss will have been aware the winger needed to come off as his physios were constantly monitoring him and feeding back to the coaching staff.
