After years of abuse and homelessness, Billie-Jo Mann from Newcastle is finally looking forward to a “proper” festive season with her own little family
"Christmas morning has such a distinct, magical atmosphere that's unlike any other day. But in 2019, when I woke up on the 25th of December, there was no way of telling it apart from any other day.
With so much going on at home I couldn’t concentrate at school. I became more bothered about drinking, which I began doing at 11, and smoking weed. I got into a relationship with a man despite not being straight, and had a miscarriage in the bath when I didn’t even know I was pregnant. It led to a complete breakdown. I had a realisation that I couldn’t go on like this. My body was ruined. I was miserable. I immediately wanted to leave my environment, so I did and didn’t look back.
I’d listen to it on repeat because it made me feel less alone. In the daytime I’d visit anyone I knew for a bit of food, and punch walls so I could sit in A&e to bene t from the warmth, and use the toilets.
