I recently spent the night at Casata Austin, a new community of 66 microhomes for rent. It offers an alternative to traditional homes or apartments in one of the nation's hottest housing markets.The 6-acre community is in a quiet neighborhood about 20 minutes south of downtown Austin. When I arrived at the development on a rainy April morning, I was greeted with rows of dark-green homes surrounded by lush oak trees, giving the place a woodsy feel.
Casata is holding six units as short-term rentals, listed on sites like Airbnb and Vrbo. I stayed in one of these units: a one-bed, one-bath with 400 square feet of indoor space.Hardy said that CasataStay had been spun off as its own business and that short-term rental units could comprise even larger portions of future Casata developments.
At Camden Shadow Brook, an upscale apartment community about 2 miles from Casata Austin, rent for a 659-square-foot one-bedroom unit starts at $1,459. Casata's units are considered manufactured homes, meaning they're built in a factory and transported to the site in Austin, where they sit atop steel frames.Casata partnered with Champion Homes, a builder of manufactured homes, to produce these units using preexisting floorplans, with some small modifications.
