I have long rejected these trends, knowing deep down they made me feel uncomfortable, but off the back of a particularly tricky few months – among other things, a newly developed anxiety was causing health problems and long-promisedhad gone silent – I was looking for a change. Armed with a hefty dose of cynicism, I began.

Joyful things that didn’t require huge effort, a reach, an expense, and things that could be absorbed alongside her feelings of grief and heartache. To be a life raft and safe harbour when her life felt like a house of cards collapsing in on itself. But one that didn’t ask her to deny how bad she really felt inside.
Spiegel decided to start taking photographs of hers – a ray of sunshine on the ceiling, her husband’s hand, a coffee cup – and estimates she now has around 27,000 microjoy pictures on her phone alone.
