Is there a Friday night takeaway more beloved than a chippy tea? Come rain or shine, we’ll gladly get drenched for a chip barm, crispy battered cod or homemade pie, because if we’re honest, it always hits the spot.
On their quest to name the Fish & Chip Takeaway of the Year, the National Federation of Fish Fryers visited chippies up and down the country, and put contenders through a rigorous judging process. Testing them against industry best practice on environmental issues, product knowledge and their responsibilities as an employer, no fryer was left unturned, and as a result, we’ve been presented with the crème de la crème of fish and chips shops in the UK to get stuck into.
It’s also got a strong reputation for its pubs, restaurants and delis - from popular public houses like The Norfolk Arms, Midland Hotel and Royal Scot, to baked goods institutions like Libby’s and newcomers like Fold, a neighbourhood bistro and bottle shop drawing in crowds from across the area. And, just next door you’ll find the Town Street Fryer, there in plain sight, quietly cooking up some of the best fish and chips in the region.
Fish is naturally on the cards, but the number of pies here deserves a mention. Split into three sections - veggie and vegan , homemade and Holland’s Pies, there’s a staggering 17 to choose from.
