In these days of instant messages, scorelines from other Premier League games appear electronically on giant stadium screens but as Everton prepare for their historic final season at Goodison Park, one lifelong Blue looks back wistfully to a simpler time when such updates were manual labour for himself.
Everton’s home was supposed to be the venue for hosts England’s 1966 World Cup semi-final match against Portugal, but the ties were the subject of a late switch less than 48 hours before kick-off, prompting understandable fury and the ground’s lowest crowd of the tournament as West Germany defeated the Soviet Union 2-1 some 58 years ago this Thursday .
