Years ago, there was a temptation to see online harassment as less impactful than in-person intrusions. But this line of thinking has since been dismissed by experts. Digital harassment causes harm: 70 per cent of women subjected to online abuse report low self-esteem as a result and more than half suffer anxiety, according toAsk any woman you know – today this behaviour is shocking but no longer unusual.
Just like in-person sexual harassment, it is framed as an inevitability of life, like taxes and bad weather. Something that women must learn to tolerate, to develop coping mechanisms for, and ways of avoiding: don’t be so vocal and visible online, don’t share pictures deemed overtly sexual, lock down your accounts rather than having them public. We’ve heard it all before of course: don’t walk alone after dark, don’t be too drunk, don’t wear a short skirt.
This is why sexual harassment is so prolific, why it has survived, passed down through generations. Because it is the exact point at which entitlement and apathy meet – where some men feel entitled to demand women’s attention in this way and other men feel that they are not guilty of the bad behaviour so are in the clear. They have a free pass to do nothing. The entitled men go onwards unchallenged and the others forget it is an issue.
For this problem to be fixed, all men must see this as a shared responsibility. At a societal level, we are brilliant at casting bad actors as “monsters” – think about the Met’s “bad apples”
