ByThe New Zealand–born pop star released her latest single,"Mood Ring," off her albumand the music video is an ethereal visual that features Lorde and a crew of backup dancers soaking up the sun in various lush sage-green ensembles. Lorde even switches up her signature brunette tresses for the music video, opting for a vibrant, platinum-blonde wig to transform into a totally new persona.
Musically, the song echoes late-'90s or early aughts-inspired folksy tracks , as Lorde narrates her inner exhaustion over trying to maintain a positive outlook amid our increasingly bleak world, turning to her array of spiritual crystals for existential guidance. In a way, the new track recalls Lorde's debut breakout track,"Royals," in that she airs her frustration with society's obsession with pop culture fodder.
