Pope Francis, the head of the worldwide Catholic Church, might seem anbut here we are. This week, the supreme pontiff appointed three women to the Vatican Dicastery for Bishops, the office that helps select Bishops in the Catholic Church. The choosing of Sister Raffaella Petrini, Sister Yvonne Reungoat and Dr. Maria Lia Zervino is an attempt to address the enormous deficit of women in formal roles of power in a Church that has an all-male clergy.

The appointment of these women into roles of formal governance could herald a significant shift for the Catholic Church… and it’s well overdue. Women have been at the forefront of grassroots campaigns and hold the relational power within the Church but they’ve been excluded from most of its formal roles.
