WhatsApp Throuples are the creme de la creme of modern-day communication
One of my WhatsApp groups is called “The Horn Dogs”. It’s named such because a few years ago, myself and my two best mates from university went on holiday to Spain and we – despite being very much in relationships – were exceedingly horny for the attractive Spanish cocktail-makers in a bar in Alicante. The shimmy-shimmy of their hips and their quite frankly erotic pronunciation of “Barcelona” while they were making us a Pina Colada was too much to take.
WhatsApp Throuples are also super-useful – they are there when you need advice on what outfit to wear, how to deal with a difficult parent, or when you’re feeling down and really need a funny meme. They’re honest, sometimes brutally so: a friend asks whether she should reply to her ex and we furiously type “NO!!!!!!!!” and “DON’T BE SO BLOODY STUPID YOU BLOODY IDIOT!”
How the size of a group affect it’s interactions was studied at the end of the 19th century by German sociologist Georg Simmel. He suggested that triads tended to be more stable because any conflicts between two of its members could be mediated by the third. He said triads had strong internal cohesiveness and a sense of connection. He also suggested that the larger the group becomes, the more the risk there is for division and lack of cohesion.
In my teenage years, my gang of schoolmates would frequently break off into three-people sub-groups, and paranoia would kick in for all of us; what if they have a sleepover and I’m not invited? What happens if we have to pick a partner in PE and I’m left out? What if they go to Claire’s Accessories without me this Saturday!But perhaps maturity kicked in somewhere along the way and started to prove Simmel right. Me and The Horn Dogs all live busy lives now.
