Rep. Ilhan Omar , a prominent member of the progressive “squad” in Congress who has sparred with President Trump, faces a primary challenge Tuesday from a well-funded rival who has focused on her outsize national profile and controversial statements.
Attorney Antone Melton-Meaux, the most prominent of four challengers in the race, has criticized the first-term congresswoman over missing votes and her comments on Israel. Like Ms. Omar, he identifies as a progressive and supports the Green New Deal and other liberal ideas, but he says Ms. Omar is too engaged in ideological purity tests to reach compromises and pass legislation, a notion her campaign rejects.
“We don’t need a celebrity, we need someone who is going to serve,” Mr. Melton-Meaux said in an interview. The district is safely Democratic, meaning the winner of the primary is almost certain to win the general election. Mr. Melton-Meaux has raised $4.1 million dollars overall, nearly as much as Ms. Omar, who had raised $4.2 million. He pulled in $3.2 million in the second quarter, compared with Ms. Omar’s $472,000 in the same period.
A Somali refugee, Ms. Omar came to the U.S. when she was 12 and later served as a policy aide to the Minneapolis City Council before winning election to the state legislature in 2016. After winning a race in 2018 to become the first Black Muslim woman to serve in Congress, she has been a vocal advocate for single-payer health care, eliminating student loans and addressing climate change.
