Imane Khelif, the Algerian boxer, secured a medal at the Paris Olympics by defeating Anna Luca Hamori in a unanimous decision in their quarter final bout. Khelif entered the arena to thunderous applause, while Hamori was met with boos from the large number of Algerian fans present.
After her victory was announced, Hamori graciously shook hands and congratulated Khelif, despite a tense lead-up to the match. This win sets up a semi-final showdown with Janjaem Suwannapheng for Khelif but, regardless of the result, she is guaranteed at least a bronze medal. Hamori spoke about her preparation for the fight, stating: "I'm not scared. I don't care about the press story and social media. If she or he is a man, it will be a bigger victory for me if I win."
