Good morning and welcome to the Wall Street Journal’s live coverage of the first impeachment hearing before the House Intelligence Committee. After several weeks of taking depositions behind closed doors, the Democrat-led impeachment inquiry into President Trump moves into full view of the public.
For House Democrats, this is their best opportunity to make the case that Mr. Trump has committed impeachable offenses and deserves to be removed from office. For Mr. Trump’s allies, the hearings will be an opportunity to challenge some of the key witnesses in the inquiry and to make their case that there are no grounds for impeachment.
Today’s hearing will feature William Taylor and George Kent — two top State Department officials who worked on Ukraine issues during the period in which Mr. Trump is accused of trying to push the Ukranian government to take actions against a potential political rival. Mr. Taylor is the charge d'affaires of the United States Embassy in Ukraine — essentially the acting ambassador. Mr. Kent is the deputy assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs — a top State Department official whose portfolio involves Ukraine matters.
Both men gave lengthy depositions behind closed doors. The transcripts of both interviews have since been released.The impeachment hearings follow a format that is unusual for Congress: Staff attorneys are expected to ask the bulk of the questions. Each party gets 45-minute blocks for questioning by House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff and the top Republican, Rep. Devin Nunes, or their staff.
