Fascination with weather can be a springboard to helping children learn more about our environment.

A funnel cloud approaches the Misty Creek subdivision in Aurora on the border of Oswego last month. The storm caused some property damage but no one was injured, according to reports. Local experts say it is not unusual for children to be interested in the weather, including tornadoes.Especially if that unicorn is really just an ordinary horse aspiring to be more than she is but ends up learning a valuable lesson on what really matters in life.

“News,” one youngster quickly shouted, his face revealing a bit of annoyance at such a silly question.Bolstered by their response, I pushed forward and asked what kind of news would be most important in their lives. Politics was a non-starter - only one child knew who the president of the United States was and another had heard of the leading GOP candidate who wants to challenge him again in the next election.

But these kids specifically wanted to talk about severe weather. Which meant I heard about earthquakes and hurricanes and floods, with one brief mention of wildfires. It seems as if everyone in the class knew of one that had come close to his or her neighborhood, with one girl boldly declaring a twister had even destroyed her home by just “blowing it all away.”

By the time kids are of legal age, scientists predict “a fifth of the world’s potentially catastrophic tipping points, such as the melting of the arctic permafrost, the collapse of the Greenland ice sheet and sudden transformation of the Amazon rain forest into a savanna could occur as soon as 2038.”Of course I shared none of this with the kids as they chattered on about tornadoes.

I also spoke with Melanie Koss about my experience. She’s a professor of literacy education in Northern Illinois University’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction, which means she teaches future educators about children’s books. One of the best things any parent – or grandparent – can do, both women insisted, is to help kids spend more time with nature.
