Reginald Hunter must take responsibility for his unfunny joke - but it's not up to the council to censor him
On the home page of Harrow Council’s website, there is a section which informs residents of important developments in the North London borough. There’s the news that its parks have won an award for being clean and green, and that the next stage of works on the ceiling of the swimming baths are taking place.
Recollections vary about exactly what happened that night in Edinburgh, but what is not in doubt is that Hunter, in, mused on the idea that having an abusive wife who complained about being abused herself was like “being married to Israel”. It is a moot point whether this constitutes antisemitism or not, but an Israeli-British couple in the front row shouted out that it was “not funny”.
So back to Harrow Council. Who are they to censor what consenting adults can see and hear? Isn’t one of the jobs of our elected representatives to defend free speech? And are they the right people to say how far a comedian can go in search of laughs, when it has already been judged to have been within the law? I’d say not.
