Celeste Ng’s third book tackles multiple themes, including surveillance, parenthood, discrimination and the power of storytelling
Celeste Ng’s new book, “Our Missing Hearts,” has multiple themes, including surveillance, parenthood, discrimination and the power of storytelling. Two topics that were especially difficult to write about for Ng: missing children and hate crimes.
“As a parent, it was difficult to write about children being taken away as a means of political control,” said Ng, who will be at the University of San Diego on Oct. 21, an event presented by Warwick’s and USD’s College of Arts and Sciences. “It has been hard to read the many reports of anti-Asian violence in the news, so writing about that was difficult, too.
“Those subjects are close to home personally,” she said. “It feels especially important to write about them in a way that makes them feel personal to others who might otherwise not feel a specific connection.”The main protagonist of “Our Missing Hearts,” Bird Gardner, lives in the wake of economic instability and violence. To keep the peace, authorities are allowed to relocate children of dissidents, especially those of Asian origin.
Ng’s previous novel, “Little Fires Everywhere,” has been published in more than 30 languages and adapted into a limited series starring Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington.“Our Missing Hearts” focuses on Margaret, a Chinese-American poet, her Caucasian husband Ethan and their 12-year-old son, Bird. Three years earlier, Margaret left the family in mysterious circumstances. As the book opens, Bird gets a mysterious letter from his mother and is drawn into a quest to find her.
