World Oceans Day is celebrated on 8 June every year to highlight the importance of looking after our oceans, which make up more than 70 per cent of the Earth’s surface and contribute up to 85 per of the world’s oxygen. From plastic pollution to overfishing and coral bleaching caused by rising temperatures, our precious oceans – and the incredible marine life that inhabits them – are facing multiple threats right now.
Laundry is responsible for 35 per cent of the microplastics pollution, causing harm to marine life, with a single load of laundry responsible for releasing up to 700,000 tiny plastic fibres into our waterways. Meanwhile, the beauty industry also generates a huge amount of plastic waste – a staggering 120 billion units – that ends up in our oceans.
