As iyanaskye explores, GetEven refuses to fall into the white-centric pitfalls that plague the teen drama canon:
once again flips the script. It is Amber who helps Olivia fit in by giving her rides in her expensive chauffeured cars and gives her clothes so she can appear rich. It is Amber who teaches Olivia the ropes of the school’s cutthroat social circle. Though their dynamic teeters on the edge of unhealthy, in the end Amber is not reduced to being Olivia’s “Black best friend,” because they are both equally reliant on each other for different reasons.
Perhaps the most delightful of the show’s characters is Margot, an awkward, relatively new student from the U.S. who transforms from bullying victim to power-player. Though she’s a gaming-obsessed nerd who typically eats lunch alone in the computer lab, Margot finds herself in a love triangle between the artsy and sweet Logan and the arrogant but well-intentioned Ed. Both Ed and Logan are befitting suitors for Margot — at least, um, at first.
In real life, falling in love doesn’t have to exist on a scale of whiteness, and it’s good to see that reflected in the YA dramas we love to obsess over.doesn’t smooth over race and identity, but the show doesn’t make it a huge plot point in every love story, either. Teens of color deserve to have their feelings and desires acknowledged, without relegating them to only race-specific trauma or debate storylines, or abandoning them altogether .
Teen dramas are fun partially because they’re an escape from reality. But that escape is made all the more enjoyable in a show like, where adolescent crushes and intentional friendships aren’t reserved for only one group of people. Love stories that are diverse don’t have to feel laborious — they can and should exist with the same ease, care, and authenticity that white ones do onscreen.
