Marie Curie's Dying in Poverty event marked the start of Palliative Care Week

At a special event on Monday, Marie Curie Healthcare Assistant Daire Lawlor gave a first-hand account of caring for patients in their own homes, witnessing how often there is little food available and how careful patients need to be about adequately heating their homes.Experts from the food bank charity, The Trussell Trust, Advice NI and National Energy Action, also told of their respective charities’ experience working with dying people throughout Northern Ireland.
Recent Marie Curie research showed that Northern Ireland was facing the highest increase in demand for palliative care in the UK over the next 25 years. And the analysis reveals there will be 20,443 people in Northern Ireland needing palliative care in 2048, compared to 15,443 currently. “This is a group of people least able to absorb the extra costs of essentials when also faced with reduced income from not being able to work - often their partners also have to give up work to look after them.
