An estimated 659,000 Texans have lost health insurance during the COVID-19 pandemic — and the state already had more uninsured people than any other.
The group found about 659,000 people in the state lost their coverage between February and May, as job losses soared.
Hospitals also feel the financial pain: When uninsured, poor Texans do have to go to the hospital, those hospitals end up absorbing much of the cost. If state lawmakers don't start fixing the state's coverage problem soon, Hawkins expects it will become a significant issue during the next legislative session, which begins in January.
