Families of the Robb Elementary School victims are protesting the continued presence of Mariano Pargas, a recently reelected commissioner who abruptly quit the city’s police force under pressure, and Sheriff Ruben Nolasco.
This image from video released by the city of Uvalde, Texas shows city police Lt. Mariano Pargas responding to a shooting at Robb Elementary School, on May 24, 2022. Pargas was the acting police chief that day, and was placed on administrative leave in July. Pargas, who resigned from the police force under pressure this fall, is also a Uvalde County commissioner. Victims’ families have been calling for him to resign his seat.
The commissioners were scheduled to examine recommendations for Sheriff’s Office policies and procedures in the event of a future mass shooting. However, they left the courtroom a few minutes into the meeting to go into a closed-door executive session in another room. Jesse Rizo, who has emerged as a community activist in the wake of the shooting that left 19 students and two teachers dead, focused on Pargas.
