Some players would have let their game spiral out of control after a start to forget but not big Cyriel.
There were only a couple of minutes on the clock on Saturday when Cyriel Dessers ’ opening involvement against Ross County saw him almost ‘trap’ the ball straight off the massive Hampden pitch.
Of course the punters have learned to take the rough with the smooth with the striker. For every smart finish - like the two he produced on Saturday against Ross County as he made it five goals in six appearances already this season - there will be a heavy touch, a wild pass or an inexplicable miss. There’s every chance Dessers could produce one of those jaw-dropping moments of cack-handed clumsiness next week at Celtic Park.
In fairness to the frontman, there was no sign of the indecision that often creeps into his game as he fired Rangers ahead 18 minutes in from a Lawrence through ball. One touch and bang, his crisp strike fizzed past Ross Laidlaw. His second, coming from one of two assists Matondo offered on the day, was the kind of chance we’ve seen Dessers fluff plenty of times before.
How much better can Gers do when they travel to Parkhead is now the question facing Clement. That might depend on just how much business the big Belgian can squeeze in before Friday’s 11.30pm transfer deadline.
