At age 19, Billie Anderson's weight plummeted to just five stone and doctors warned her she would die 'within a few months'Now, British scientists have located a weak spot in DNA that appears to be present in 95 per cent of people suffering the illnesses.
Cases are on the rise, with more than half a million people in the UK living with the condition as of 2022 – nearly double the 300,000 previously estimated.Billie Anderson, 27, was just 19 when she first noticed blood in her stool and found herself needing to rush to a toilet 30 times a day. She was found to have ulcerative colitis.
Ms Anderson, who lives in London and works in PR, underwent the six-and-a-half-hour surgery and spent three days in intensive care. She still needs medication to control flare-ups including high-dose steroids, intravenous biologic drugs and immunosuppressants. A team from the Francis Crick Institute, working with University College London and Imperial College London, carried out a genetic analysis to try to unravel the cause of the IBD.
When tested, these anti-cancer drugs, called MEK inhibitors, not only reduced inflammation in the immune cells, but also in gut samples from patients with IBD.
