Latest Liverpool transfer news and gossip as ECHO writers look at whether the Reds should sign Juventus star and Italy international Federico Chiesa
Liverpool are yet to make any new signings this summer but that has not stopped rumours of potential additions to the squad.
With Mohamed Salah's contract at Liverpool also expiring in 12 months, the Reds have been tipped to move for a new right winger this summer potentially. With that in mind, ECHO writers look at whether Chiesa is the ideal player to be signed by Liverpool. Chiesa is certainly a talented player, and if the reported price tag is accurate then it would certainly fit into Fenway Sports Group's strategy of value-for-money signings. Whether the plan to sign a future Salah 'replacement' was expected to take place this summer, though, only those in the Anfield hierarchy will know.
Whichever way you look at it, that price is a steal for a player who could easily return to the heights first expected of him. Yes, there are concerns surrounding his injury track record but you cannot argue that on his day he would offer the Reds something different going forward. For now, Mohamed Salah can be relied upon so there is no need to unsettle him with the arrival of major competition in the same position. Chiesa does have the versatility to play on the left at least, but then he'd just be third in line behind Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo. There's also Ben Doak to consider in all of this too, and pushing him further down the pecking order when supporters just want to see him fit and able to play isn't the answer.
Add those two to last season's preferred front three of Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz sees Liverpool with at least five options. Harvey Elliot can also play in the wide areas with Ben Doak hoping to make an impact on the senior team soon. Liverpool are not desperate for wide players this summer, but links with Anthony Gordon show that they may be thinking of preparing for life without the likes of Mo Salah and Luis Diaz. Compared to the £100m that Liverpool would have to spend on Gordon, the £21m is a low price and a risk that is probably worth taking.
