Keir Starmer, David Lammy, Yvette Cooper and Rachel Reeves all have big plans for No 10, the Foreign Office, Home Office and Treasury
Clockwise from top left: Shadow Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper; Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer; Shadow Foreign Secretary David Lammy and Labour’s Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves Keir Starmer’s election machine has switched gear into campaign mode as parties battle for power in the 4 July general election.
“If you think about the last 10 years, we’ve been in a very reactive space, understandably with things like the pandemic or Brexit and so on, so you’ve got a policy machine which is used to working at a very fast pace and used to responding quickly, but perhaps less, experienced more recently, in doing a longer-term work,” she said.
Numerous names are rumoured to be in the frame, including Josh Simons, director of the think-tank Labour Together, Ravi Gurumurthy, chief executive of the social innovation charity Nesta, Nathan Yeowell, director of the Future Governance Forum, Mariana Mazzucato, the Italian economist and founder of UCL’s Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose, and Jeegar Kakkad, director of government innovation at the Tony Blair Institute.
Given Donald Trump’s current poll lead makes his return to the White House a real prospect, however, Labour hasalso, with Lammy securing time with JD Vance, Mike Pompeo, Lindsey Graham and Trump’s campaign manager Chris La Civitas. Lammy would work to strengthen Nato as part of a Labour government, at at time when the US and China are in competition for dominance, and continue the current level of support for Ukraine. He also believes there is an urgent need to build alliances and defend democracy across the world when climate change, AI and tech are playing havoc with the status quo.
Reeves has suggested the Treasury’s “underpowered” Enterprise and Growth Unit will be beefed up in an effort to drive up Britain’s low productivity rates and an Industrial Strategy Council is planned to report into the department.
