Rudi Smith, 27, and his partner, Lauren Smith, 28, were struggling to pay the £750-a-month rent on their home in Leeds - so decided to look for a new way of living
A couple purchased a "tatty" static caravan from a scrapyard for £6k to live rent-free, and now save 90 per cent of their wages every month.
They invested around £2,000 in renovating the caravan, but now live mortgage and rent free, spending less than £100-a-month on bills. This means Rudi is able to put away 90 per cent of his salary every month into a joint savings pot, which the couple hope to invest in the future.They pair say they can save £13.8k-a-year on rent by living in their caravan. "I save 90 per cent of my wage a month.," said Rudi, a stone mason from Leeds. "I have been a lot happier.
Thanks to the compact size, the couple have invested in premium materials, including herringbone wood flooring. "It looks old on the outside and lush on the inside," said Rudi. "After the first month we were like 'oh wow, that's everything paid for'."The closest house is at least 150m away. We can make as much noise as we want."A single gas bottle, costing them just £48, keeps their home heated for three to four months.
