The president of an elite university called police on her own students, but only succeeded in pouring fuel on a fire that has reached the White House

On that occasion, the presidents of the Universities of Pennsylvania and Harvard were asked whether “calling for the genocide of Jews” was “against their code of conduct”. They said it depended on the context.Shafik was prepared. She and three others from Columbia University were asked: “Does calling for the genocide of Jews violate Columbia’s code of conduct?” All replied: “Yes, it does.”

The protesters want the focus to be on their calls for divestment. President Shafik wants to be seen as guaranteeing the safety of all students. Yet neither is getting that coverage, because this has once again become about antisemitism on campus. Jonathan Ben-Menachem is a Jewish student and member of Student Workers of Columbia, one of the organisations that make up the Columbia University Apartheid Divest coalition which is behind the encampment. He has visited the site and said it is peaceful.

Columbia President Minouche Shafik testifies before Congress on 17 April Firstly, this is an issue of free speech; what Columbia University should allow to be said and not to be said. This was seen in an exchange last Wednesday in Congress over pro-Palestinian chants and the Arabic term “intifada”, used to describe two Palestinian uprisings against Israeli rule.

Secondly, this is about freedom of protest. The encampment may have violated Columbia’s rules, but is that not also the point of protest – to disrupt? But is that fair when many students may simply want to learn and not have their studies disrupted? Classes have moved online for the rest of the semester because of the actions of a few.
