His first electoral test is likely to come in the autumn at a Westminster by-election in the seat of former SNP MP Margaret Ferrier, where a recall petition opens next Tuesday.
Asked what the impact could be on Mr Yousaf’s attempts to grow support for independence and revive the party’s polling, the MSP replied: “I think it can only make things worse. The SNP have to start to properly listen to the dismay this situation has created.” One senior party member predicted that this decision would prove to be a “running sore” that would last for at least the rest of this month, when Holyrood enters its summer recess.
