Ballard has always talked about building teams good enough, deep enough that it's not about the quarterback. Philadelphia has done it ... twice.
Insider Joel A. Erickson recaps the Indianapolis Colts' 17-16 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.INDIANAPOLIS — Forget, for a second, about the way that Colts game played out.Take a few steps back. Take in the full picture.
But the Eagles had pushed in all their chips, seemingly, on Wentz, believed in him enough to fork over a big-money deal that seemed inescapable. When Philadelphia’s offensive line broke down and Wentz’s worst flaws overwhelmed everything else he could do, the Eagles seemed headed for the same sort of quarterback purgatory that has crippled the Colts.Except that Philadelphia general manager Howie Roseman took a chance.
But the Colts have been reluctant to take the same kind of flyer on a young quarterback in the draft since the 2019 season, even though that seemed to be the initial plan when Indianapolis signed Philip Rivers, a move that was supposed to build a bridge to the next franchise passer. Philadelphia’s offensive line has been through some change since that season. An Eagles offensive line that overpowered everyone fell off, dropping to one of the NFL’s worst units in the disastrous 2020 season. Philadelphia had to replace its left tackle, left guard and right guard.
For most of the past four seasons, Indianapolis has had that kind of line, but the retirement of Anthony Castonzo and the loss of Mark Glowinski have left the Colts unsettled this season, a fact that was apparent once again on Sunday. But the offensive line’s dip this season has sent a shockwave through the entire franchise, the same way Philadelphia’s front five collapse in 2020 ultimately cost the Eagles. Maybe Indianapolis is going through its transition period; maybe the Colts need to be more aggressive to get the offensive line play back to the standard Indianapolis has set.Philadelphia has the kind of depth Ballard has always craved and been unable to provide.
