Housing prisoners within sight and sound of residential homes has been blasted by an inspector as the “major design flaw” of the new £85 million HMP Stirling.

Housing prisoners within sight and sound of residential homes has been blasted by an inspector as the “major design flaw” of the new £85 million HMP Stirling .

The report said: “The major design flaw was clearly the Separation and Reintegration Unit and high dependency units being located within sight and sound of the neighbouring community. In an audio recording from residents homes, prisoners were heard loudly singing along to the 1990s Backstreet Boys hit ‘I Want It That Way’.

“I can name probably a dozen prisoners in there just because I’ve heard them shouting at one another and talking.”There are six accessible rooms, one of which contains a hospital bed. But the inspection also praised “outstanding examples of caring, compassionate staff” saying “the modern accommodation, the campus design and therapeutic environment were highly impressive and fully in keeping with the trauma-informed ethos set out in the SPS Strategy for Women in Custody”.Speaking at the prison yesterday , Inspector Ms Sinclair-Gieben said the prison should be extended.
