President Michael D Higgins is considering whether the bill should be referred to the Supreme Court.
The bill, which passed all stages in the Oireachtas "Irish Parliament) earlier in July, provides legal underpinning for a new oversight body in the Defence Forces.Others have warned that the proposed law could prevent them criticising government policy.
This can be done if the bill or any of its provisions are thought to potentially breach the constitution. Although the Defence Forces always stress the need for political impartiality, some members believe this would limit the ability of members to give an opinion to any political organisation, society or grouping.After the meeting concludes, President Higgins will decide whether to refer the bill to the Supreme Court.The council was established to advise the president of Ireland in the exercise of many of his or her discretionary, reserve powers.
