I recently received this query from a reader: I’m still on cable (I know, I know) but haven’t taken the (cord-cutting) plunge yet. My only choices for...

In this file photo illustration taken in 2019, a 5 G wireless technology logo is displayed on a smartphone and a wireless signal sign displayed by a tablet in Paris.I’m still on cable but haven’t taken the plunge yet. My only choices for internet service in my area are Grande and Spectrum. I do have a Roku and subscribe to several streaming services.

The thought occurred to me that I could get a 5G phone dedicated to providing a Hotspot with an unlimited data subscription for far less than what I’m currently paying Spectrum and connect my smart TV and Roku via Wi-Fi to this Hotspot. Is the bandwidth now sufficient to do this? The primary reason I still have cable is because my wife loves the DVR. If I could find a solution for this, I’d make the switch. What do you think?Getting an additional unlimited data phone line with a 5G phone and using it as a mobile hotspot is a good idea, but Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile all have caps on the amount of 5G hotspot data you can use.

There are some 5G home internet options from Verizon and T-Mobile that do not have data caps or contracts.I checked my address in Dallas, and I am not in the coverage area for Verizon or T-Mobile 5G home internet service, but both companies said to check back because their coverage areas are always growing.

Check to see if your address is eligible. Those plans are in the $50 to $70 per month range, but the prices can vary if you’re also a wireless customer and you can bundle with autopay. As for a digital video recorder for cord-cutters, you’ll really only need to record content if you are receiving free, over-the-air local channels. I use a TiVo Bolt for recording my OTA channels.
