Secretary of State Antony Blinken is due to meet Jordanian leaders in Amman, after a visit to Tel Aviv where he called for “humanitarian pauses.”
The Pentagon is curtailing official U.S. travel to Israel, a decision that will affect senior defense officials and members of Congress, according to a memo released by the Pentagon on Friday night. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in the memo, dated Tuesday, that he is restricting travel “until further notice,” with exceptions granted with the approval of him or Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr., chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
It also does not apply to visits by President Biden, Vice President Harris, members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, him, Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks or the service secretaries. The memo did not provide a reason for Austin’s decision. But a senior defense official, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue, cited the evolving security situation in Israel. “Right now, it’s just not a safe time to travel there,” the official said.
