President Biden was scheduled to visit Israel on Wednesday to show solidarity and address the growing humanitarian needs of civilians in Gaza.
The al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza City — where authorities suspect an airstrike killed hundreds of people Tuesday — is owned and operated by the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem, said Eileen Spencer, head of the American fundraising arm for the diocese. “We don’t know if the hospital will still be standing,” said Spencer, executive director for American Friends of the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem.
“The political status of Gaza affects all aspects of life here because of restrictions on movement of materials and people in and out. Electricity, medicines, food, fuel, and personnel are all restricted to some extent,” according to the website. The hospital runs a free program for early detection of breast cancer among women ages 40 and above, per the website. It also provides free medical care and food twice a week to surrounding towns and villages.
