Islamist militants have launched an attack on Israel More than 200 people have been killed and thousands left seriously injured after brutal conflict broke out in Israel. Gunmen from the Islamist group Hamas infiltrated the Gaza Strip, to the south of the country, on Saturday morning following a barrage of rocket attacks. At least 70 Israelis were reported dead and a further 545 injured after Palestinian militants launched the unprecedented operation.
‘The military declares a state of war alert,’ it said in a statement. ‘In the last hour, the Hamas terrorist organisation had begun a massive shooting of rockets from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory, and terrorists infiltrated into Israeli territory in a number of different locations.’ It said Hamas ‘will face the consequences and responsibility’ and Mr Gallant added: ‘The state of Israel will win this war.
