In news to women nowhere, ThisGirlCanUK found that 3 in 10 women have been sexually harassed while exercising 🏋️♀️ But a new social media trend is naming and shaming the men that harass women. Type “Gym Creep” into TikTok and millions of videos appear
while out exercising, whether that be in the gym or out jogging. When they are not being harassed, women areabout being harassed: 31 per cent said they were concerned about showing their bodies when exercising, while 20 per cent worry about wearing tight clothing when working out.
Sometimes the leering is subtle, a look that lasts uncomfortably long. Sometimes it is more conspicuous. “During lockdown, I was running through town at around 11am in broad daylight,” says Sally Cameron Urquhart, 29. “These two blokes were walking towards me on the pavement and parted, and I felt thankful because it was all still quite scary withUrquhart quickly learnt how wrong she could be.
“At one point, he drove away but then looped back down the road and started following me. In those scenarios, you feel fear. You anticipate anxiety, but I felt genuine fear. I was quite new to running as well so I couldn’t even outrun him.” When women are not being followed, leered at or groped while exercising in public spaces, they are being told that they can’t actually do sport. Abby Mercer, 26, had just started weight lifting when she was approached at her gym. “This man was staring at me for ages,” she says. “Eventually he came over and tried to correct my chest flies. I was doing it right and I had to show him the video I was copying for him to leave but then I felt uncomfortable for the rest of the gym session.
