‘It means freedom’: Hundreds gather to celebrate Juneteenth in San Antonio
She remembers a time when Juneteenth didn’t attract as much attention or fanfare. She’s glad to see that it now does.
While Texans have honored Juneteenth every year since June 19, 1865, when Major Gen. Gordon Granger announced the end of the Civil War, it hasn’t been until recently that the holiday has been celebrated more widely. Hardeman said it’s hard to tell for sure if more people celebrate the holiday today, as she didn’t attend celebrations as often as a young woman. But she thinks that’s the case.
There were a host of other Juneteenth events going on throughout the city — though the Juneteenth Festival has been one of the longest standing in San Antonio.
