For many families, the livestock show at the Houston Rodeo was a homecoming of sorts, with many returning to greet old friends after a two-year hiatus.

Janae Hokanson, 10, an FFA member from Lubbock, kisses Ronald in the NRG Center at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Tuesday, March 8, 2022, in Houston.Jasper the goat saw an opportunity for a snack. He craned his neck toward an open trash bin and tried to munch on a discarded cup.

People were also excited to return to the livestock arena. The Junior Livestock Show and Horse Show Competitions were held in 2021 as private events, but many people hadn’t been back since officials shut down Houston’s rodeo two years ago as the COVID-19 pandemic became reality in Texas. For the Armstrongs, the livestock show was a homecoming of sorts. It was their first time back in Houston since they moved from their Huntsville-area home to Arkansas roughly a year ago, and a chance to reconnect with a tightknit group of people who participate in some of the same livestock shows. As the Armstrongs packed up in the rain and headed home, the Brannons were just getting settled among the crowded arena. Some people stood in lines with goats and lambs on leashes.

“Coming back to Houston is like coming back to my home show,” she said. “Now that I’m a mom, and I get to share those same experiences with my own kids, I think that’s what really makes it special.” “In the end, it is going to go to our food chain,” Cheyenne said. “Do I want to give mine up? No…you get attached to every one of them… it’s how the world turns. It’s part of life.”Cheyenne, who lives in Waco, began the drive to Houston around 1 a.m. Tuesday with her family and members of her 4-H team. It was a long drive but the experience is really fun, she said.

In the same way, Shuron Sloan said she’s watched her 16-year-old son Christopher develop into a hard-working young man through his participation in the livestock show.
