As Texas looks to expand gambling for a third-straight legislative session, researchers are concerned about the gambling addiction that it would bring.

Two influential Republicans, Rep. Jeff Leach of Plano and Sen. Lois Kolkhorst of Brenham, are carrying the sports betting bills, which could mean the bills have a better chance than in previous sessions. Gov. Greg Abbott and House Speaker Dade Phelan, R-Beaumont,. Both, however, have said they do not want to see slot machines at gas stations or convenience stores.

“We can tell if someone is starting to have a problem with their gambling if they start using more and more credit cards, or more and more bank accounts and they are shifting between them,” said Lia Nower, a professor and director of the Center for Gambling Studies at Rutgers University. “I was betting all this money that I didn’t have, so I was still paying back a lot of the debt,” Malek said in a phone interview.Key Republican lawmakers join push to legalize digital sports betting in Texas
