The Gaza Strip, an exclave about a quarter of the size of London and home to more than two million people, had already been under a blockade since 2007. With Gaza’s airspace, borders and sea under Israeli control, many of those who live there are effectively trapped.Dr Abu-Sittah fears that it will be only a matter of days before al-Shifa will run out of supplies if no aid reaches the hospital.
The upmarket Rimal neighbourhood in Gaza City, where the medical complex is located, has been almost wiped out. Entire apartment blocks have been toppled, streets teeming with markets and shopping centres uprooted and university buildings, mosques and the offices levelled.The Palestinian foreign ministry has accused Israel of using white phosphorus bombs against civilians in populated areas in Gaza.
The use of phosphorus bombs is not banned outright under international weapons law, and many armed forces possess them. They are also used to create smokescreens and to mark targets for airstrikes due to the volume of smoke they create.
