This is a pretty uncomfy truth, especially for progressives who loudly — and rightly! — cheer on single moms.Alyssa has a few left-friendly ways to start shifting the conversation, though. She recommends eliminating the penalties for marriage that exist in some welfare programs. There’s movement for pro bono wedding services that might entice folks daunted by cost. And she has concrete policy ideas for “improving the supply of ‘marriageable’ men.
One step at a time, Megan says — because the first step is a doozy: People need to start accepting that marriage’s decline is bad, and to start saying it.American culture “used to treat two-parent families as the ideal,” Megan says. “If all of us would do so again, it could help a lot of kids.”
