For just over two months, golfers and birders alike have been watching a pair of bald eagles at the Corica Park Golf Course in Alameda.
That’s more important than ever as the female eagle prepares to lay eggs, which could happen “any day now,” Phillips said. Bald eagles typically lay one to three eggs from late February through early March, and both parents will take turns incubating the eggs for a period of 32 to 36 days. After the eggs hatch, the eagles will feed their chicks until they fledge about 11 to 12 weeks later.
“We hope they thrive and have lots of young that spread throughout the Bay Area,” Phillips said. “It would be nice to have a pair in San Francisco. it may not happen next year, but in the next 20 years, I expect we will.” Onsite monitors from the Golden Gate Audubon Society have been out at the golf course every day, rain or shine, to ensure people don’t fly drones over the nest or get too close to the eagles. They’ve also been leading guided tours of the nests, which are rising in demand and provide a safe way to observe the eagles’ behavior. Each tour is limited to about 10 people in order to avoid disrupting the birds, but every last one has filled up within minutes, Phillips said.
“We’ve seen them hunting and foraging. The female loves to roost on the ninth tee,” Lewis said. “They seem to be a very close couple.”
