Little Chef restaurants are a lost pit-stop 'treat' that welcomed Greater Manchester's tired motorists
Long before the arrival of fast food behemoths like McDonald's and Starbucks to the UK, the Little Chef was a rare and welcome treat for tired motorists around Greater Manchester. For those of a certain generation, the thrill of pulling off the road after spotting Fat Charlie - the plump chef on its sign - is a cherished memory.
The restaurant chain gained fame for the Olympic Breakfasts, a unique spin on a full English, as well as their Early Starter and Jubilee Pancakes. Other favourites from the extensive menu included sirloin steak, toasted sandwiches, and a dedicated children's menu featuring delights like crispy fish fingers and French fried potatoes.
The Olympic Breakfast was added to the Little Chef menu in 1994 and quickly became a favourite. The dish consisted of two rashers of back bacon, a sausage, two fried eggs, mushrooms, sautéed potatoes, griddled tomato, baked beans, and at one point a small steak was included. In 2009, the company took a chance and recruited world-renowned chef Heston Blumenthal to update the menu at some of its restaurants in a bid to safeguard the business's future. Greasy breakfasts were replaced with avant-garde offerings such as ox cheeks and breakfast dishes like strawberry and orange flowerwater yoghurt.Adding his own twist to fish-and-chips, Blumenthal served the dish with a miniature bottle of pickled onion essence to let diners evoke the 'aroma of the chippy'.
Despite efforts to revamp the menu and furnishings, the roadside restaurant chain couldn't be saved. In early 2017, its owners Kout Food Group sold most of its remaining 70 locations to Euro Garages who converted the restaurants into partner franchises such as Starbucks, Subway and Greggs, while other locations were sold to McDonald's.
