The 22nd Cook County Farm Bureau Giant Pumpkin Contest was Saturday at Puckerville Farms in Lemont. The competition’s record pumpkin is a 1,115-pounder that won in 2015.

The event has several contests and she sat down to participate in the carving contest, which she won.“It’s bringing the kid out of you,” she said.
“Mary has been coming here for years and she lassoed me to come last year,” said Joe, a native of Steger and Tinley Park. “This year I tried it — it’s fun.” Joy Homerding enjoyed a home patch advantage and won first place in the giant pumping contest with an entry of 157 pounds. She is an owner of Puckerville Farms and this is the first time she won the contest after a second-place finish last year and coming in third place in 2019.
Carlson is a prolific winner at Puckerville but this year the Plainfield resident, a native of Dolton who attended Mount Carmel High School in Chicago, did not enter.“The last few years, I’ve had some bad luck and the main one I had wasn’t taking off,” he said.Growing almost half-ton pumpkins is not just a matter of throwing a few seeds in the ground.
