Fearnley admitted to being distracted by Djokovic’s score during his debut win at Wimbledon.
British wild card Jacob Fearnley will embrace the special experience of playing Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon after his straight-sets victory over Alejandro Moro Canas set up a second-round tie with the 24-time grand slam champion.
“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t watching the scores on Centre Court. It was getting in my head a little bit that I was going to have to play him,” Fearnley said. World number 277 Fearnley arrived in SW19 after a narrow defeat to compatriot Billy Harris at Eastbourne, but continued to create chances on the serve of Moro Canas, who came through qualifying but had limited experience on grass.
After an hour’s delay, a double-fault by Moro Canas gifted Fearnley a break in the fifth game of the second set. He squandered five match points before a crisp forehand winner at the back of the court earned him a maiden grand-slam win and a clash with Djokovic on Thursday.“I had a great month. Won the national championships in America with TCU. Had, like, a week to prepare, maybe less, for Nottingham. Had to qualify. Kind of almost actually bowed out first round qualifying. Yeah, just managed to pull out some wins for the rest of the week.
