Jacksonville Jaguars' defensive end Josh Allen will play on the franchise tag in 2024 after not receiving a contract extension. Allen had a career-best season in 2023 with 17.5 sacks, ranking second in the NFL. He will earn $24 million if he plays on the tender.
Allen had received the franchise tag from the Jaguars and was set to make $24 million in 2024 if he played on that tender.
Allen, 26, is coming off the best season of his career during which he had a franchise-record 17.5 sacks, which was tied for second in the NFL last season.He ranks sixth in pressures and is tied for 10th in sacks in the NFL over the past three seasons. The Jaguars picked Allen seventh overall in 2019 and he had 10.5 sacks as a rookie playing alongside Calais Campbell and Yannick Ngakoue. A knee injury limited him to eight games in 2020 and he had 7.5 sacks in 2021 and 7.0 in 2022.
Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke did not offer Allen a contract extension after the 2022 season, essentially giving Allen a prove-it season in 2023 while he played on the fifth-year option in his rookie contract. He responded with one of the best seasons by a defensive player in franchise history.
Allen's 45 sacks in his five NFL seasons are second on the Jaguars' career list, trailing leader Tony Brackens by 10 .
