Somewhere near the middle of the set, he will perform his first crossover Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit --the very controversial “Try That In A Small Town.” More specifically, it’ll be after “Tattoos on This Town” and “Rearview Town,” but before “Crazy Town” and “Hicktown.”Aldean is all about proverbial towns, metaphorical towns, the town you grew up in, the town that becomes too small that you must leave behind.
Humans gravitate toward friction, a trait that has been amplified in the social media age by algorithms that feed our devices the most divisive headlines and content possible. This atmosphere primes the pump for a song like “Try That in a Small Town,” creating an environment that makes it easier for the song to resonate and become a hit. We Americans love like-minded tough talkers.
If no one came for your guns when a crazed Jodie Foster fan shot a president and blew out the brain cavity of a press secretary or when yet another angry man got a high-powered rifle and murdered people during an Aldean concert, the “godless” “big city,” “urban” “elite” sure as hell aren’t coming for your guns. The gun lobby got folks gassed and songs like this fed you what you want to hear.
Shortly thereafter, the think pieces started rolling and the song became his first Billboard Hot 100 chart topper because “US” has to show “THEM.” “Try That In a Small Town” has settled down at No. 10 on the Hot Country and No. 30 on the Hot 100 in its eighth week on the latter chart.
