Watch Jason Isbell and Brittney Spencer perform “Gimme Shelter” in tribute to Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts.
Spencer, who opened the show and will also open one of Isbell’s upcoming residency concerts at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, handled the Merry Clayton vocals, singing the iconic “War, children/it’s just a shot away” line
with a fierce energy. As Isbell took the lead solo and the 400 Unit’s drummer Chad Gamble pounded away at his kit, Spencer danced and shook maracas before coming back to the mic to scream the “rape, murder” lyrical breakdown.
