Illan Meslier's glaring mistake late mistake cost Leeds United victory at Sunderland
Broadcaster Jeff Stelling has criticised Junior Firpo and Leeds United's players for not consoling Illan Meslier after the goalkeeper's late blunder against Sunderland. The Frenchman was left "heartbroken" after allowing Alan Browne's hopeful ball into the box to squirm past him and gift the Black Cats a point in an entertaining clash at the Stadium of Light.
Some United fans have expressed their anger over Meslier's reaction at the end of the match. The shot-stopper spoke to Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris, who he knows well from their days together at Lorient, and was pictured smiling and laughing on the pitch with his fellow countryman. United boss Daniel Farke said Meslier was "in tears" in the dressing room as the Whites missed the chance to go level on points with the leaders. “I’ve worked for 30 years in professional football, I’ve won and lost many points in the last seconds – lucky and unlucky – but to be honest something like this I’ve not experienced in 30 years of professional football,” he said.
“To lose two points in the last moment of the game in this way is heart-breaking and tough to take, it feels like a bit like a loss. Before the game I would have said away to Sunderland is a good result.”
